As a woman, it never occurred to me that this position could make a male attendant nervous about creeping the woman out.
I have done things too as a doula that I look back on and admit to myself I was misinformed or had an agenda or whatever. Live and learn. We all start from somewhere and grow with experience. A good heart, like this resident gentleman you describe, is ultimately so much more important than some of the details. If he could talk to a mom who really enjoyed birthing that way and be reassured that her comfort lies in her ability to position herself as she sees fit, he may feel more confident.
And hearing from a medical professional that birth goes well as often as it does is extremely validating to patients.
Thanks so much for your comment!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06059951273542374898noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5686997867572223504.post-66225095199941554062010-05-26T23:09:55.096-04:002010-05-26T23:09:55.096-04:00Oh gosh!!! I just look back at some of the things that I did (or didn't do) as a new nurse and thank the universe that nothing terrible happened as a result of my ignorance. I did get one of the residents at JGH to admit to me that he wouldn't do exams or deliveries with a woman on all fours because he thought it was too sexual and he felt it was inappropriate for him to touch a laboring woman like that. I actually found him to be respectful in his own way, even if a bit misguided. But boy oh boy, the things I have missed in my few years as a nurse. Thankfully birth goes well as often as it does.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5686997867572223504.post-34932279229668848682010-05-20T19:46:55.183-04:002010-05-20T19:46:55.183-04:00Be informed and have your own doula.Be informed and have your own doula.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06059951273542374898noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5686997867572223504.post-63221386295493599882010-05-18T15:36:26.764-04:002010-05-18T15:36:26.764-04:00I never really thought of things that way. While the vast majority of the time my clients are treated really well in the hospital, there are times when things get absolutely traumatizing, and frankly, the situation is handled with one pile of bullshit after another. While I cannot make comments on clinical judgments (not being a doc or midwife), it is obviously WRONG to treat a woman like she's either demanding or stupid by resorting to scare tactics.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06059951273542374898noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5686997867572223504.post-89293038600410649082010-05-04T21:44:47.352-04:002010-05-04T21:44:47.352-04:00Hi Leslie,
