That is awesome, and I'm glad you own your rock star status with and without epidural. I'm truly sorry your second birth didn't work the same way...it really sucks to be in a position of wanting pain relief and not to get it. Women have the right to end their pain in birth when they choose.

You had very straightforward, efficient births, and the most ideal epidural ever. Sadly, I don't see things play out like this much of the time. I wish epidural worked as well for everyone as it did for you.

When you advocate the epidural to anyone who asks, for the sake of veracity, please inform them of the risks as well, and state your case was ideal. Otherwise you risk not giving all the information to empower someone to make their own choice. Many women who had great bottle feeding experiences want to advocate artificial infant feeding to anyone who asks, by saying for example, "I formula fed and my kids are just great..never been sick, and are in fact superheros". While that's great, the truth is that the vast majority of studies have shown that breastfeeding is most definitely the healthier choice for baby and for mother. To only advocate formula feeding to anyone who asks could be providing misinformation based on personal bias.

If you ever find yourself birthing again, may your epidural be swift and excellent, and may you again feel like the rock star you are. Thanks for commenting! It is good to have different perspectives.Lesley Everesthttp://www.motherwit.canoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5686997867572223504.post-47663318691279266922011-07-08T08:52:47.031-04:002011-07-08T08:52:47.031-04:00I know that many people believe in natural births;...I know that many people believe in natural births; I can personally say it is not for me. With my first child I had an epi, and it was an amazing experience. Once it was in, I felt no pain (there was NO grunting, crying, or screaming, in spite of what is posted above)and I DID love the process of giving birth--not just the afterward, but the actual process. I could still move my legs and sit up and I felt marvelous. I pushed for 20 minutes, and was totally euphoric. I know that this is not the case of everyone who has an epi, but it seems as if mine was the ideal epi situation. With my second child, the nurse did not get around to me in time for me to have an epi. Two hours after my original request, the nurse showed up to tell me it was too late, because I was already delivering. As a result, I have only positive memories of delivering my daughter, but only negative ones of delivering my son. I certainly feel like a rock star for delivering my children, but having an epi doesn't change that for me--I felt just as much a rock star with my daughter, without the frustration of the pain and screaming of birthing my son. I am still angry at the hospital for ignoring my request. I just wanted to offer an alternative perspective, from someone who has done it both ways, quickly and without complications, but would certainly advocate the epi-dural to anyone who asks.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5686997867572223504.post-720940586700633072011-05-01T20:43:23.437-04:002011-05-01T20:43:23.437-04:00Uh, Lesley? When I went to the bf clinic, the nurse looked at me with a surprised look on her face and asked how I did it... I didn't put 2 and 2 together initially but it was the same perseverance that empowered me to go through a natural birth. It really was a time where I felt the most true to myself and the closest to my husband.
